Even in the year 1881 several newspaper articles referred to the “agreeable, refreshing and stimulating possibility of taking a cooling bath without worries in appropriate swimming baths”. The population of Mühldorf, however, had to wait 28 years before the long yearned for wish for an outdoor swimming pool finally came true.

On June 11, 1909 the first public swimming pool was opened in Ahamer Straße. On October 31, 1919 the town of Mühldorf became owner of the bath and expanded it into public swimming baths. This facility had a 40 x 10 m concrete swimming basin and 12 wooden changing cubicles. In the years 1964/65 extensive redevelopment and expansion took place. From then on three swimming pools, a diving platform and 15600 square metres of sunbathing area were available to the visitors. In 1991 the town’s department of works took charge of the outdoor swimming pool. A block-type thermal power station was constructed to produce electrical current economically. In summer, the waste heat of this current production plant is used to heat the outdoor swimming pool. A tastefully equipped shop offering beach fashion and other accessories have rendered the entrance area even more attractive. In 1996 an adjacent plot of land was purchased, increasing the lawn area for sunbathing by nearly 5000 square metres and the car park by 70 additional parking spaces.

The well-cared facilities, the appealing lay out of the swimmer’s, attraction and paddling pools, the well-integrated slide, the sports facilities for beach volley ball, street ball, table tennis, miniature golf, as well as various additional facilities are clear indicators for the popularity of the outdoor swimming pool in Mühldorf. This also manifests itself in the high number of visitors of the past few years.
