Scope of competence of the town archives

In the age of the internet and data highways, it is often possible to retrieve data within seconds. In many cases, however, this information is short term data, which lose significance within very short periods of time. The situation in the town archives of Mühldorf, however, is quite different. In this centre of documentation and data storage you will find documents from the Middle Ages up to the present day.. With its great variety of tasks in administration, scientific research and in the fields of historical and political education and local history and geography it has become an outstanding cultural institution. Due to its large store of documents going back as far as the late Middle Ages, it nowadays assumes an eminent place among Bavarian archives. While other towns suffered heavy losses due to fire, floods or robbery, the town archives of Mühldorf managed to save their "inventory" through the centuries. Realizing this and knowing that Mühldorf as former "Salzburgian town" in the midst of the electorate Bayern used to be a distinctive highlight in the historical landscape of old Bavaria, the town administration has always stressed on the system of archives. Due to this professionalisation in the archives system, Mühldorf managed to be among the few Bavarian towns to which a large amount of deeds were given back from the Bayerische Hauptsaatsarchiv (Bavarian State Archives), its eldest deed being from the year 1303.

Today the town archives is a modern authority that renders effective and efficient services to pupils, students, housewives or senior citizens. In the year 2001 alone as many as 800 users requested documents for scientific, genealogical or historical research. 120 written requests had to be answered. The pilot project "Archivpädadogik", developed and supported by the Kultusministerium (Ministry of Education and the Arts), enjoys great popularity in the town archives of Mühldorf. The aim of this project is to establish the extracurricular archives room as part of the curricular class room. The user statistics (130 requests for school purposes) shows that an increasing number of pupils find their way into the archives and work with its sources. Electronic data processing facilitated the registration of the archive documents (a listing of 400 m length) rendering its administration efficient and innovative. A free foldout brochure provides information on the documents available and the tasks and purposes of the archives. The use for scientific, historical, genealogical and educational research is free of charge. Copies and reproductions can be obtained against payment of a small fee.
