Bicycle tour 1, about 7 km: Scouting the old town centre

Starting point : Münchner Tor (1) nach oben Home     Tour 2

Münchner TorThe Münchner Tor (1) is the oldest building of the town (1218). Its former name "Nagelschmiedturm" indicates that the nail forgers' guild was responsible for the defence of this bastion.

On the left side of the unusually spacious town square we find the Rathaus (2). Its façade bears the mill wheel with 8 vanes, which is on the coat of arms of the town. The magnificent conference hall in Renaissance style and the witch dungeon of the year 1749/50 as well as the medieval kitchen are open for visitors.

Münchner TorOn the façade of Frauenkirche (3) you can see a painting of the Battle of Mühldorf, the last battle of knights without fire weapons on German ground.

Shortly before Altöttinger Tor (4) we turn right and reach the "Wies", a beautiful secondary market place. As we ride through the buttresses and across the town square we reach Tuchmacherstraße on the other side. We move on to Kirchenplatz and cycle past the church on the right.

Here we can see the mighty parish church St. Nikolaus (5) and the chapel of St. Johannes (14th century), the presbytery (6), a granary (7) that accommodates today's town library, the "Haberkasten" (a former oats barn) (8), which is a cultural centre today, and the Museum of Local History (9).

We follow Fragnergasse, Nagelschmiedgasse and Weißgerberstraße, go through Münchner Tor out of the town and turn right into Stadtwall. On the left side we can see the former "Pflegschloss" (10), which was built by prince-bishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg in 1539 and which accommodates the Tax Office today.
